Polymarket Margin Trading: FCM Filing vs What Works Now

Polymarket does not offer margin trading on its event markets today. Every YES or NO share is paid for in full, on both the global site and the U.S. app. On July 3, 2026, a Polymarket affiliate applied to the National Futures Association (NFA) to register as a futures commission merchant (FCM), the first step toward U.S. margin. That filing alone does not switch margin on, it would only cover Polymarket US customers, and as of October 11, 2026 there is no public approval or launch date.

You don't have to wait for that process: PredMart already lets you trade Polymarket markets with up to 4x leverage from a USDC margin account on Base.

This article covers what the filing actually is, what still has to happen before Polymarket margin could exist, how long Kalshi's version of the same path has taken, and what works now. For a step-by-step walkthrough of how a leveraged position behaves from open to close, see how positions work.

What did Polymarket file for in July 2026?

According to the NFA's BASIC registration system, as reported by The Block on July 10, 2026, Coming Home GBA LLC, an affiliate of Polymarket, filed for FCM registration and related approvals through PM Derivatives LLC. The main filings were submitted on July 3 and cover three registrations: futures commission merchant, NFA member and swap firm (Unchained). The Block noted that Bloomberg had first identified Coming Home GBA as a Polymarket affiliate.

What each registration does:

Registration What it allows
Futures commission merchant (FCM) Accepting and holding the money customers post as margin
NFA member Brings the firm under the NFA's rulebook and oversight
Swap firm Covers swap-related derivatives activity

The point traders miss is that none of these extend credit by themselves. An FCM is the intermediary that can hold customer margin. Whether the exchange lets that margin be less than 100% of a contract's price is a separate decision.

Does an FCM license mean Polymarket margin trading is coming soon?

No. FCM status is necessary but not sufficient. Polymarket would also need the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to approve changes to its exchange rulebook that permit positions that are not fully collateralized at the outset (Crowdfund Insider). Tech Times called that rulebook step the decisive one and noted that it has no fixed timeline. Casino.org said it could take several months.

Two other factors add uncertainty. The same Tech Times report says the CFTC has been examining Polymarket's business since at least June 2026, citing CNBC, with no disclosed timeline. And in May 2026, Senators John Hickenlooper and Jack Reed asked the CFTC to "prohibit prediction markets from allowing margin trading in connection with event contracts, particularly for retail lending" (letter).

As of October 11, 2026, we found no public report that the NFA has approved the PM Derivatives applications, and no report of a Polymarket margin rulebook filing with the CFTC. Polymarket has not announced a launch date.

Would Polymarket margin apply to polymarket.com or only Polymarket US?

Based on the filings, only the U.S. side. Polymarket now runs two separate venues:

The FCM and the rulebook change both sit inside the U.S. regulated structure. Nothing in the July filings, as reported, describes margin on polymarket.com. So the answer to "when will Polymarket have margin" depends on where you are. A U.S. trader is waiting on the NFA and the CFTC. A trader on the global site has no announced path at all.

What can you use for leverage on Polymarket markets right now?

Leverage on Polymarket outcomes already exists as a separate layer. PredMart is one of these: you pick a Polymarket market, choose YES or NO, post margin in USDC on Base and select leverage up to 4x. The minimum margin is $1. Your maximum loss is the margin you post, but you can be liquidated before the market resolves.

PredMart is not the only option, and the designs differ in how they handle collateral, pricing and liquidation. Our comparison of platforms offering leverage on Polymarket covers the alternatives. Polymarket's own Perps product is also leveraged, but it trades crypto and other asset prices rather than event outcomes (Polymarket Perps explained).

How far along is Polymarket compared with Kalshi?

Kalshi is walking the same path and is roughly two steps ahead. That makes its timeline the best public reference point for Polymarket. The table below tracks each step that, based on public reporting, a U.S. exchange needs before margin on event contracts can go live.

Step Kalshi Polymarket
Affiliate files with NFA for FCM status Done (Kinetic Markets LLC) Filed July 3, 2026 (PM Derivatives LLC)
NFA approves FCM and swap firm registration March 23, 2026 No public approval found as of October 11, 2026
Exchange files margin rules with the CFTC September 22, 2026 (Kalshi Klear) No filing reported
CFTC review completes Earliest effective date November 9, 2026 Not started
Margin live for customers Not yet Not yet

Sources: The Block, Parameter, and our analysis of Kalshi's CFTC request.

Kalshi's gap between NFA approval (March 23, per the Hickenlooper-Reed letter) and its margin filing (September 22) was six months. If Polymarket followed the same sequence, margin would need an NFA approval first and then a separate CFTC review. That is an illustration of the steps, not a forecast. Kalshi's own request is also narrow: Kalshi says it targets institutions that meet capital requirements, the filing excludes sports, and Kalshi told CNBC that culture and mention markets stay out too.

What would Polymarket margin look like if it is approved?

Nobody outside Polymarket and its regulators knows yet, because no Polymarket margin rules are public. Kalshi's filing is the only detailed model on the table, and it hints at what a regulated version could look like (Finance Magnates, crypto.news, PYMNTS):

Polymarket could choose a different design. But if a regulated version follows Kalshi's template, three things follow for traders: it would arrive U.S.-only, it might exclude sports (the Hickenlooper-Reed letter put sports at 40% of event contracts listed on Polymarket), and it would probably give little or no leverage close to resolution. Those are the moments many event traders care about most.

How does leverage on Polymarket markets work on PredMart today?

On PredMart, margin rates are fixed rather than modeled. The maintenance margin is 20% and opening requires a further 5% buffer, so the entry margin at maximum leverage is 25%, which is where the 4x cap comes from. If your margin falls to 20% of your position's value, the position is liquidated and PredMart seizes the remaining margin (Margin and liquidation).

A useful rule of thumb from PredMart's own trade math: your side's liquidation price is about entry × (1 − 1/leverage + 20%), before fees. For a YES position bought at $0.60:

Leverage Margin posted per $100 position Liquidated if price falls to Adverse move
1x (Polymarket today) $100 Never liquidated Up to -100% at resolution
2x $50 $0.42 -30%
3x about $33 $0.52 -13.3%
4x $25 $0.57 -5%

At 4x, a 3-cent move against a 60-cent position ends the trade. That is the trade-off that regulators and Kalshi's design are reacting to, and it is why most traders do better at 2x-3x with a stop-loss than at the maximum. PredMart's trading panel shows the exact liquidation price before you open.

FAQ

Does Polymarket offer margin trading?

No. As of October 11, 2026, Polymarket event markets are fully collateralized on both polymarket.com and Polymarket US. An affiliate filed with the NFA on July 3, 2026 to become an FCM, but margin would also need CFTC approval of rulebook changes, and Polymarket has not announced a launch date.

When will Polymarket have margin trading?

There is no announced date. The NFA registration has to be approved, and then the CFTC must approve rulebook changes allowing positions that are not fully collateralized. Kalshi, which is further along, received NFA approval in March 2026 and filed its margin rules on September 22, 2026. Its earliest possible effective date is November 9, 2026.

Will Polymarket margin be available outside the U.S.?

Based on the July filings, no path for that has been described. The FCM application and the required rulebook change belong to Polymarket's U.S. regulated structure, Polymarket US, operated by QCX LLC. Polymarket has not announced margin for the global polymarket.com platform, where U.S. users are restricted to closing positions.

Can I use leverage on Polymarket markets today?

Yes, through third-party layers rather than Polymarket itself. PredMart offers up to 4x leverage on Polymarket markets from a USDC margin account on Base, with a 20% maintenance margin. Liquidation seizes the remaining margin, so lower leverage leaves more room.

Is Polymarket Perps the same as margin trading?

No. Polymarket's Perps product offers leverage on asset prices such as crypto, not on event outcomes like elections or games. Margin on event contracts, the YES and NO shares that settle at $0 or $1, is what the July 2026 FCM filing is aimed at, and it is not live yet.

The Bottom Line

Polymarket margin trading is a real plan with a real filing behind it, but it is at the start of a long road. The July 3 FCM application is step one. It still needs NFA approval, a CFTC-approved rulebook change, and a product launch, and based on the filings it would serve Polymarket US customers, not the global site. Kalshi, months ahead on the same road, still has no margin live. Treat any Polymarket margin date you see as a guess until a CFTC filing appears.

Leverage on Polymarket outcomes is already available as a separate layer. Size it for the liquidation risk.
